What an absolutely beautiful novel! This story focuses on the life of Marie, a nun in the 12th century. Originally French, and of partial royal blood, Marie is banished to a convent in England as a young woman. Lauren Groff tells a fast-paced story that spans the entire life of Marie.
Told in third person and present tense with rich historical detail, the novel develops as Marie becomes the leader of the abbey, bestowing success and riches among the sisters through a variety of projects and excruciating labors. Her internal conflict involves her strong will and love of power and wealth, while also being a sister of religion and humility. Her height and her physical strength define her stature, adding to her charisma and fearlessness.
I’m amazed by the skill of this novel, which was first published in 2021. The day-to-day life of the sisters, the small dramatic outbursts, the rivalries and love affairs, all of these small moments come together to create a fast-paced portrait of a woman who is confined by society to such a role in a community of women.
