This novel covers a wide range of American history by focusing on a single cabin somewhere in Western Massachusetts. With a creative tapestry, Daniel Mason weaves together the various fictional inhabitants who dwell in this cabin over the decades.
First published in 2023, this novel requires some patient observation to determine the connections between characters and families. Multifarious sections are written as journals, letters, verse, and even a serialized true crime story, with unique voices and historical vocabularies. The research and precisions of language impressed me. I found myself looking up antiquated terms and enjoying the flavor of the old-fashioned lingo.
The stories cover the American Revolution, slavery and the Civil War, and the early 20th century, with both tragedy, comedy, and mystery. Rather than follow a linear history textbook, this novel provides a dream-like visit to this plot of land, its seasons, its trees, its animals. I was enthralled from start to finish.
